The Platano River Biosphere Reserve  was established by the U.N. and the Honduras government to protect the outstanding cultural and natural resources of the Rio Platano valley.
Here you still find virgin jungle and a large number of endangered species such as scarlet macaws, toucans, harpy eagles, jaguars and tapirs. Miskito and Pech Indians live along the river Platano growing yucca, bananas, corn and beans as well as hunting and fishing.

See the Platano River Biosphere where many of your fantasies will come true: exploring tropical rainforest catching a glimpse of exotic wildlife and engaging in cross-cultural interchange with indigenous people.

Routing

Day 1.
According to flight changes we will take a jungle plane  from  La Ceiba to Brus Laguna. The little town  is the meeting point of Misquito and Garifuna culture .

A motorised dugout canoe will take us into the Laguna de Ibans  From there  we hike along the Caribbean beach and visit various villages of the Misquito indians.  We will have lunch in Raista where  we stay the night with a Miskito family who once operated  Honduras first butterfly farm.

Day 2.
The following day we will descend the Rio Platano in a motorised dugout
canoe until we reach the Indian village La Marias after a 6 hours boat ride. Walk around the village and get to know the friendly locals. Spend the warm tropical nights in a thatched roof  hut and share the traditional meals with the local people. Overnight in Las Marias.

Day3
Discover the lush tropical jungle on a guided tour with an experienced local guide while listening to the roar of the howler monkeys.

Or take a pipante ( a narrow and long dugout ) to go further up the river to see those mysterious signs carved into the rocks by unknown ancient authors.  Archaeologists believe that the Petroglyphs give some clues about the lost " White City " yet not found in the jungle. Return late afternoon and overnight stay in Las Marias.

Note: this trip is only recommended for people in exellent physical condition who have prepared for true backcountry hiking and camping.

NOTE: Travellers should be aware of the fragile local culture and nature. Open minded and respectful behaviour are expected. Appreciate the local culture on its own terms even if it means some discomfort or annoyances not found at home. Lodging is very basic. Good physical condition is required for the trip as it involves several hours of walking.
